Session 1 book buddy
This week session took place at my book buddies house. It was right after he got home from school, so I was a little nervous if he would do it with me. Everything went well, and luckily he wanted to do it with me. I brought along with me a bucket of coloring materials, glue, scissors, Morris The Moose book, my cutout pictures, and the comprehension activity. I know my book buddy really well, and I know he loves art and crafts! So I knew he would be happy when he saw the crayons, and glue. I think everything I brought was pretty successful. Although, I do wish my activity was a bit more artsy because he really enjoys that. I did not find any of these materials not successful, but I think I would do a few things differently if I was to do this lesson again. I would have my book buddy cut out the moose parts that he glue to his cow. Like I said he loves to do art, so he would have enjoyed the cutting. Secondly, if he was to cut the moose parts out it would have taken up a few extra minutes. ![](https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_xkxX_vCPlbh4zdt5d9x33eDzUjcproPR0jUn3OKVMBDAZtS2YEnNg-DEKB4hTq9wuVfgKfxP1cutQGVXeg5gthMHURaGCJh52yBLM9eeT6WDFS5YlvF_CjHggxYXDeqiQ-loCgJ)
My comprehension activity went really well, he enjoyed this the most! He first colored the cow, and then turned his cow into a moose! Just like in the book Morris confused all his friend for a moose because just like him, they had four legs and a tail. I wish I did more animals than a cow, it went super fast.
Next was the picture sort, where we sorted animals. At first he asked me “how do I sort them?”. When I told him a few different ways he could sort them he decided to go with, color. When he got to the dog that was black and brown he was not sure where which pile to put it in. He decided to go with the black pile. I was happy that he gave himself a second to think about which pile, because it could have gone under either black or brown. ![](https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/lG9VLjIVFNtzEmjaGVeLd816Rj6f1GWYWIHIuKcfLjGwdU7cuhO-rvTQuWEElG4FoUYSGTVa5vNpbLsqVmRfgUjuSD4IQeB7E_rByxB6uFzNrXSfd3yQifDlDpLYph5QJYNBN9Sx)

When I told him it was his turn to share and read a book with me, he was excited! At first I could tell he was kind of nervous, but when I told him we could read it together he seemed find. He ran up to his room to grab his shark book, he loves sharks! He showed me his favorite shark, and his favorite page in the book. We talked about all the pictures and all different things we saw. He has a ton of shark books, so I am sure this was not the last shark book he would be sharing with me.
Lastly, was the writing activity. He thought it was pretty funny that he was “helping me with my homework”. When I told he we were gonna write a letter to my teacher about we did, he got a little worked up. I think he was a little nervous because he does not know how to write, or he was over me at this point. But he did a great job with it. At first we came up with a sentence to write. Then I helped him spell all the words. He did awesome with writing his letters, I was impressed. He had his D backwards, I did not correct him but I think next time I will. After he was done I said “What do you notice about your D?”. He looked at me funny and then said “it's wrong” after a long pause.
Overall I think this session went great. For next time I will make it a little more artsy because that is what he enjoys. I also may make the activities a little more challenging because he is one smart little boy and flew through them!
It sounds like you and your nephew had a wonderful time. I have a couple of books he might like (and somewhere and under the sea lotto game. I'll look for it). You should be able to keep your Buddy's attention--you know the kind of materials he likes and the type of books!! Excellent work.
