session 2 book buddy
For session 2 of the book buddy I brought with me, Pete the Cat, Play Ball!, crayons, paper, letter game flash cards, shaving cream, and Tawny Scrawny Lion. This week session took place at his house. This time he seemed excited to do this activity with me, which I was really excited about. I know that my book buddy loves Pete the Cat books, so I knew he would enjoy this lesson. Last time he asked me if could do something with shaving cream ( his class does a lot of activities with shaving cream ) so I thought the letter game would be a perfect activity to do with shaving cream. Like session 1 I did not really find any materials that I brought not successful. They were all used and worked very well for my book buddy.
In this Pete the Cat book, Pete seems to miss the ball a lot in his baseball game. But every time he misses he makes it clearly he is still happy. No matter how many times he got out he was still happy, and tired again. I thought this was perfect for my book buddy because he loves to play baseball. Sometimes before his games he gets nervous, but we always tell him to try his hardest. I think it was a great message that Pete stayed positive even when he got out. I thought I would do an activity that showed this message. My book buddy drew a picture of how Pete felt when he got out.
While doing the concept of print I personally thought my book buddy felt a little nervous. He would look at me after every question I asked for me to like tell him the answer, or tell him if he was correct. He actually did really good, but sometimes he would second guess himself. I think he was nervous to get the answer wrong. I noticed that when I asked where I should begin to read he pointed to the title page. We used the story Tawny Scrawny Lion for this activity.
For the letter game activity I made baseball shaped flash cards with letters on them. I put them in a pile (not in order) and my book buddy picked five of them. We spread our shaving cream all over the place mat (I used aluminum foil which made for a very easy clean up!) He picked his first letter and wrote it with his pointer finger. When he picked the second one he wrote that letter next to his first. I thought he would erase the first letter, and then do the second. I kind of liked how he did them all next to each other so we could see his finished work when he was all done, and talk about them. He really loved this activity, he kept laughing every time he got to put his finger in the shaving cream. I think next time if I was to do this again, I would have my book buddy do more than five letters.
I had my book buddy write a letter to my teacher about what we did. Next week I am thinking I will do something different and more fun. He showed that he was a little nervous again to write, but I think he just does not want to make a mistake. He did great, and he was excited to show me his lower case letters. I helped him with spelling, but he did all his letters on his own.
Next week I am going to do something with Room on the Broom! Just like me, my book buddy loves Halloween! I think this week went great, and he showed a little more excitement than last week. I think this was because he had an idea of what we were going to do.
